Another club milestone for the Southern Renegades.

Another personal milestone for John Cauley.

After the 48 year old Mobilian and his partner, Brian, took in the excitement of Chicago's International Mr. Leather Contest this spring, the decision was made: John would finally enter a leatherman contest. Friday night, August 15th at B-Bob's in Mobile, John captured the crowd and the title of Mr. Southern Renegade/Mobile 2008. He becomes the first to ever hold the title.

"This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time", John tells The Renegade. John bested the field of four handsome men who competed in a series of questions, various stages of leather attire, and a fund raising effort to benefit South Alabama CARES. For his effort, John will join Darrel Foret, Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola 2008 for an expenses paid trip to New Orleans in October. There, they'll both compete in the Mr. Lousiana Leather Contest, a precursor to International Mr.

B-Bob's packs in for MSR Contest Leather in Chicago Memorial Day Weekend.

A.J. Bourgeois of Crestview was first runner up, with Saraland's Richard Beasley and Mobile's David Joseph completing the line up. This year's Judges were: John Thomas, co-owner of The Roundup in Pensacola, Mr. Bob Brunson, President of Mobile's Gay Pride 2008 Celebration and agent of T-Best Talent Agency. Bob also tends bar at Vision's Twist, Dauphin St. in Mobile, Mr. Michael Albracht, New Orleans, LA. Mr. Louisiana Leather 2008 and member of the Lords of Leather, and Mr. Gary Vanderventer, president of The Lords of Leather in New Orleans and winner of International Mr. Drummer 2001.

John will now represent the Southern Renegades and bar sponsor B-Bob's at the Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest and Weekend, set for October 17, 18 & 19 in New Orleans. A "restless" reststop, orange warning cones, and a sudden appearance by "Brother Boy" and the Queen of Country Music all set the tone for the 13th Annual Mr. Gulf Coast Bear Contest at B-Bob's in downtown Mobile! The theme? "Big Rig Trucker Bears", a mind-numbing, long haul down the interstate of desperate living that has become the comedic trademark of this annual fund raiser for South Alabama CARES.

Rick was chosen from a group of five contestants, each finding himself in the unenviable position of following an opening act by guest host AJ McKay. AJ presented inspirational passages from the movie "Sordid Lives", complete with appropriate attire. (not to be confused with "a tire" you might find under a doublewide...)

What followed was a series of "trucker themed" exercises offering bonus points to the contestant who could best impress the crowd with... well, even now we're not quite sure what they were doing, but they all did it well, right down to pumping up a spare tire while adorned in little more than an "athelete's friend"...

In the end, it was Rick Crain of Pensacola who best interpreted the trucker bear theme, walking away with a trophy, $150 from B-Bobs, and a HUGE gift basket from sponsor Elbow Grease.

A special thanks to the supportive crowds drawn from four states that filled the bar for both contests. Your support proves the bear and leather organizations along the Gulf Coast are an important part of our growing community!

Brady's "Leatherman" Nets New Funds for The Company of Men

When Pensacola artist Scott Brady was asked to create a few "leather oriented" art pieces on canvas a while back, he took the challenge. The result created a buzz and nods of approval in Pensacola, Mobile and throughout the growing Gulf Coast leather community. Scott presented half a dozen new works appealing to the levi/leather crowd during "Rear Entry", a patio party for men during the 2008 Mobile Pride Weekend. Scott was good enough to donate one of those works to the Southern Renegades to be auctioned off in support of our group. The chosen piece was featured prominently in our Memorial Day Weekend poster... and during the recent Mr. Gulf Coast Bear contest, it delivered. "The Leatherman" was sold at auction for $600 dollars to a New Orleans businessman, supporter of the Southern Renegades and member of the Lords of Leather. "That's great!" was Scott's reply upon learning of the sale. "I hope that helps the Renegades."

Does it ever! Because of the unique and simple methods of our group, we administer no dues, and have no treasury. Charitable donations are given as collected and are given priority. Funds for t-shirts and events are raised infrequently. The painting will help us obtain new club t-shirts, an extra club banner, & help support our Mr. Southern Renegade contestants in the Mr. Louisiana Leather Contest.

Mobile's Darrel Foret Takes First Ever Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola Title!

(July 5, 2008 Pensacola, FL) A Mobile man emerged from a field of four contestants from three states to capture the first Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola title during Saturday night's event at The Roundup in Pensacola. Darrel Foret, a business owner and bar employee at The Midtown Cruise Pub in Mobile was chosen by a panel of four judges to receive the title in front of a packed house. Mr. Lee Raines of Biloxi was chosen first runner-up.

Also competing was Mr. Scot Perry and Mr.Todd Arnold from the Pensacola area. According to the event tallymaster, the final scores of all four contestants were very close.

The Southern Renegades wish to thank the enthusiastic audience. We also appreciate the efforts of John, Doug and the employees of The Roundup, as well as the participation of our panel of judges:

Local Help Agency to Benefit from Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola Contest

It's a Southern Renegade custom: Nearly every club event features a fund raiser for a local service agency.

The Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola contest was no exception.

Just before the final round, audience members were asked to vote for their favorite contestant with dollars. All money collected would then be donated to Appetite 4 Life, while the top money-getter would receive 50 bonus points toward his final score.

The Roundup patrons came through, and in about 15 minutes, our four competitors collected $560 for the agency! The check will be presented to Appetite 4 Life by The Roundup on behalf of the Southern Renegades.

Appetite 4 Life is a meals-on-wheels program, serving people living with HIV/AIDS in the Pensacola area.

What takes New Orleans by storm in October?

Well, yes, Halloween of course. But the weekend of October 17, 18 and 19, Mr. Louisiana Leather 2009 takes over the Marigny!

The Lords of Leather have moved the event from Decadence weekend to October so it can stand alone! And the Lords have surrounded the contest with a weekend filled with fun... parties, a beer bust, even the Southern Renegades will host a cocktail party and t-shirt auction at The Phoenix.

Of course the men chosen as Mr. Southern Renegade/Pensacola and Mr. Southern Renegade/Mobile will be there to represent the Skulls in the competition. Renegades Raise Funds for AIDS Task Force (Posted: June 15, 2008)

Skulls' First Mississippi Event Enjoys Big Crowd, Generous Support

Biloxi, Mississippi has now been introduced to the Southern Renegades. Friday night (June 13), Biloxi's "Just Us" lounge was bursting at the seams, as the Skulls answered the call to help raise funds for the South Mississippi AIDS Task Force. The idea? A Renegade Raffle Night, with prizes donated and all money raised going to the Task Force. The result? $448 collected via the raffle, and an additional $100 donated by the Renegades (money raised from our Memorial Day Weekend T-Shirts sales). Amanda, who watches over the SMATF (South Mississippi AIDS Task Force) tells The Renegade that "independent" money is crucial, because most of their funds are tied up with matching federal grants, which have certain requirements.

The crowd eagerly snapped up the raffle tickets, and many mingled with club members, getting their first introduction to the Skulls. Several left sporting new club shirts that they either purchased from the Renegades or won in the raffle. Just Us employes tell The Renegade that the crowd was larger that usual for a Friday night, and they look forward to future Southern Renegade events. A BIG "THANK YOU" is extended to "Just Us" Lounge for hosting the club, and those who donated prizes (Renegades Lee and Scott were instumental in that.) And a big shout out to Matt Worner and his partner Steve, who came over from New Orleans. They've just returned from Bear Pride in Chicago, where Matt was chosen Mr. Bear Pride. He added his own unique brand of enthusiasm to the night's festivities.

The weekend began with a frog-strangling thunderstorm, driving the Southern Renegades' Welcome Party off the open patio at The Roundup, and into the shelter of the surrounding bar! No matter- the beverages flowed and so did the energy... and then? Well, the new day that dawned brought abundant sunshine that remained all weekend! Perfect! Midtown Beach Party Sets Stage for Big Memorial Day Weekend!

Saturday night, May 17, John and Brian offered up a Skull Beach Party in their Midtown home (which features that great outdoor room and spetacular back yard). The huge pile of grilled meat kept everyone fed and cold beer and cocktails generously flowed. There was even an appearance by the Sacred Skull of the Southern Renegades, imparting his unique wisdom in the flickering glow of the tiki torches. (actualy it started out as a table setting, somehow made it's way outside...)*

"Sordid Lives" Star Preps Mobile for New TV Series

Don't say we didn't warn you.

You may have just witnessed the next big thing... and you couldn't see the forest for the trees. Better said, you couldn't see the actor from the entertainers.

Saturday night, May 10, Jason Dottley, co-star of the new Logo Channel series "Sordid Lives" brought his promotional campaign to B-Bob's in Mobile. The idea? Greet the crowd, have a chat about the show, and join in on the celebrations of a few prominent birthdays, like Venus and Miss C. However, the crowd had tips in hand and was hungry for the regularly scheduled show. That left Jason little choice but to join them, which he did very graciously (He IS a Southern boy, after all.) To put it in polite Dixie speech-

Jason was precious.

The crowd was... nice.

And that's too bad, because "Sordid Lives- the Series" could be the big break-out show for MTV's Logo channel. Its success could make Jason Dottley a new hot Hollywood brand that others are eager to meet, and we could have gotten to know a little better.

However, Jason eagerly answered questions and spoke openly with a handful of Sordid Lives fans (including some Skulls) prior to his appearance. The Renegade took part in that discussion.

Jason Dottley was born in Memphis, Tennessee and raised in Vickburg, Mississippi. Acting in a series with mega stars like Rue McClanahan and Olivia Newton John would be a milestone for any small town Southern boy.

"We're not getting paid much", says Jason, "but we love it. I love working for Del."

He should. Del Shores is the writer and director of the original "Sordid Lives" movie, and is now giving birth to the series. He's also Jason's partner. But Jason tells The Renegade, others in the cast were drawn into the project by his partner- especially Golden Girl Rue McClanahan.

"Del writes for older women in a way they love," says Jason. However, parent network MTV felt compelled to tone down a couple of romantic scenes featuring McClanahan. According to Jason, they were a bit "too" romantic.

How... golden.

As for Olivia Newton John, who has had her battles with cancer, Jason believes she's ready for another bout with success. "She says this is the best she's ever felt!" he says.

"Sordid Lives-the Series" has produced 12 episodes for the first season, which premiers this fall on Logo. Some Logo shows can be watched on Comcast's "On Demand" service in Mobile. Customers with some home satellite services can receive Logo. Still, Jason says watching and writing Logo is the best chance for the show to survive and blossom.

"Watch it", he says ethusiastically. "Then e-mail Logo that you love it! They put a high value on e-mails and the internet!."

I suppose it's the least we could do.

It's too late to tip him a dollar.

Renegades Enjoy Their 1st Mobile Pridefest(Posted: April 7, 2008)

Sure it was ambitious!

This year's Mobile Pridefest was packed with events for the entire LGBT community, starting with gatherings and parties even before the weekend began. And from attendance reports from bar owners and organizers, the fourth official Mobile Pridefest was the biggest and best yet. Even the parade, which was preceeded by more than 8 inches of rain, had plenty of revelers stationed in Bienville Square. And among the long list of events were several designed with our own Southern Renegades in mind.

Friday Night: Mr. Leather & Stormy Weather

Pride Friday saw a full house at B-Bob's, upstairs for the official Dance Party of Pride, and again downstairs for the club's "Biker, Bear, Leather & Uniform Night". And when the skies opened with tropical storm force, everyone stayed put and partied! About a dozen members of New Orleans' "Lords of Leather" krewe joined The Renegades for the fun. Michael Albracht, Mr. Louisiana Leather 2008, took part in the Renegades' custom of selling raffle tickets, using our popular "inseam measurement" method. Micheal approached his task with enthusiasm and netted himself a haul of cash to support his upcoming trip to Chicago. That's where he'll compete for Mr. International Leather come Memorial Day Weekend. Our thanks to B-Bobs for hosting another great event, and for their donations to our raffles.

Saturday: In the Street, In the Back Yard, In the Rear!

After nearly ten hours of downpour, more than 8 inches of rain, and lots of street flooding, something magical happened.

The rain stopped- just in time for the Mobile Pride Parade!

Even with rumors running rampant to the contrary, parade entries began lining up at the Mobile Civic Center shortly after one p.m. Then promptly at 2:30, Mobile police led the procession through the heart of downtown and around Bienville Square, where several hundred people lined the streets, waving at friends and competing for beads and a variety of curious throws... (Shower curtain rings?... Huh?... Oh, THAT'S what they're for!) Among the entries? The B-Bob's "Bees", Bay Area Inclusion's unique "sign" procession, P-FLAG, Biloxi's Just Us Lounge Mega Float, Order of Osiris, and Mr. Lousiaiana Leather to name a few. The parade was covered by the Mobile Press-Register and NBC 15 News, letting the region know Mobile Pride is alive and well!

Just before dark, the Renegades, the Lords and their guests flocked to Midtown for the Southern Renegades' Pride Grill Out. It was a great chance for the two clubs to get to know each other better and enjoy some beer and burgers. Renegade Tad did the cooking, Rick, Rafael, Roman and Lee helped prep for the event, and everybody brought beer! Kudos to Renegade John for that great carrot cake and "ball of cheese". Thanks, guys!

The evening brought the crowd back to downtown Mobile, this time to Dauphin Street and Vision's "Backside" Patio for "Rear Entry", the Official Men's Party of Pride. The party was co-sponsored by Visions and the Southern Renegades. The patio quickly filled with club members, locals, and many out-of-town guests. The party was illuminated by lights focused on the masculine artwork of club member Scott Brady, who created seven new pieces for the event. The Southern Renegades would like thank Visions, (Bob, Rex and Sonia), the Lords, and all of those who attended our events. And here's a shout out to those who donated items for our raffle Saturday night: Larry with Club Sun, B-Bobs, The Phoenix in New Orleans and Visions... and anyone else your editor my have omitted by mistake during his long and arduious road to recovery.
